Typing in your target language

Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Hindi, Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, Arabic and Hebrew are written in their own scripts. There are two ways to type answers in them: WordTrunk's built-in conversion, or a keyboard for the language on your device.

Built-in conversion

In revision answers, translation cells and the translation search, type the sounds with ordinary Latin letters and WordTrunk converts them as you go. The あ / A button beside those fields turns this on and off, and your choice is remembered for each language. It starts switched on.

Letters that could still become something else wait until your next key, with a preview under the field, and are converted when you submit.

Japanese (Japan)

Lower case types hiragana and capitals type katakana. Double a consonant for a small っ and use - for a long vowel. Kanji need your device's Japanese keyboard.

Add a keyboard to your device

A keyboard for the language gives you what the built-in conversion cannot, such as kanji and Chinese characters. It is free and built into every device, and WordTrunk works with it as it is.

Windows

Open Settings, then Time & language, then Language & region. Select Add a language and choose the language. Switch keyboards with the Windows key + Space.

Mac

Open System Settings, then Keyboard. Under Text Input, select Edit, then + and choose the language and input source. Switch with Control + Space or the globe key.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings, then General, then Keyboard, then Keyboards. Select Add New Keyboard and choose the language. Switch by tapping the globe key.

Android

Open Gboard settings, select Languages, then Add keyboard, and choose the language. Switch by tapping the globe key or holding the space bar.

Typing kanji and Chinese characters

Japanese (Japan)

Choose romaji input (on a phone, the QWERTY layout). Type the reading, such as neko, press Space to see kanji such as 猫, and press Enter to confirm.

Chinese

Choose a Pinyin keyboard. Type the pinyin, such as mao, and pick 猫 from the list. You do not need to type the tones.
